Admissions Program
The New York School for the Deaf (NYSD) is proud of its programs and its campus. We feel the best way to fully understand what we have to offer students is to come for a tour. At that time, we can show you the programs that relate best to the student in question - that is, if the child being considered is 4 years old, we will arrange a tour of the pre-school program. If the student is 15 years old,then a tour of the high school is in order. To learn more about our programs, contact Admissions: 914-949-7310;

Evaluating Students' Abilities
The New York State Education Department (SED) requires an audiological evaluation. When you
come for a tour, please bring a copy of your child's most recent
evaluation. That report, along with an application,
will constitute the package to the SED for approval to evaluate.
NYSD evaluates all students as part of our admissions process.
The evaluation includes the following:
- Social history (interview with the parents)
- Audiological evaluation
- Speech/language evaluation
- Educational evaluation
- Psychological evaluation
|
|
The evaluators then meet as a Multi-Disciplinary Team, to
determine if the NYSD has an appropriate placement for your child.
If placement at NYSD is recommended, then the CSE (Committee
for Special Education) or the CPSE Committee for Pre-school Special
Education) of your school district will be asked to hold a CSE
meeting. NYSD will present our recommended IEP (Individualized
Education Program), and the parents, along with the school district,
will decide if NYSD is the appropriate placement for your child.
If that is agreed upon, final paperwork is submitted to the SED,
so that an appointment to NYSD can be officially made. |
