In celebration of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, Fanwood was proud to welcome Art Director, Creative Filmmaker, and Advocate for Diversity, Disability, and Inclusion: Storm Smith.
Storm led engaging discussions about the importance of identity, self-worth, culture, and language. She advised students to enjoy school, even if they struggle at times.Education provides the tools needed to accomplish dreams.
Storm stressed that each of them matter, and to not let anyone oppress them. Her message was a strong and powerful one, following the theme of courage, bravery, and respect for yourself and others.
Black History Month Museum
In February of 2018, NYSD's Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee created a Black History Museum. All students participated in this event. and it was very well-received from the school community.
Women's "HER Story" Gallery
In March of 2018, NYSD's D.E.I Committee displayed a Women's "HERstory" Gallery. The Gallery told the "Her story" through a timeline, data wall, and fashion exhibit to depict women's' rights, struggles, and triumphs in the United States and other countries.
This Gallery further demonstrated the potential for NYSD to promote diversity within the our community, and provide engagement with historical and current topics.
